I’ll fess up. I have a pottery addiction. Years ago I took a pottery class, hoping that I too could produce beautiful bowls, cups, and plates all on my own. But after a few weeks of diligent ineptitude, all I had to show for myself were two grossly misshapen bowls that each weighed about as much as a compact car. Oh, well. After that, I decided to leave the potting to the professionals. And, lucky for me, Cape Cod is a paradise for potters and the people who love what they do. One of my favorite places to succumb to my addiction is Scargo Pottery in Dennis. It is on a little street, fancifully named Doctor Lords Road, hidden off a slightly bendy bit of 6A, right across from Scargo Beach.
Scargo Pottery is located in a sprawling house, nestled amongst tall pine trees and beautiful flowering bushes. On any given visit there, you can see potters serenely creating their works of art and check out their exquisite showroom, which is both indoors and outdoors. It has been around since the early ’50s, and now is a place for many local artists who both work and show there. Kim Holl, daughter of the Harry Holl (who founded Scargo Pottery) and one of Harry’s four daughters that now run the business, makes delicious mugs and dinnerware that are perfect presents for anyone lucky enough to get them.
I would love to know about your favorite pottery stores on The Cape and Islands. I’m always hungry for another ceramic fix.
